I just installed 2.1 alpha on my new Joomla 1.5.5 install (test site).  I got this error message when clicking on the left menu CiviCRM Shortcuts ->  My Contact Dashboard

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in /home/armadall/public_html/civi/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/packages/Smarty/Smarty_Compiler.class.php on line 1131

It also changed the font size of my right menu navigation to a larger font.  Clicking on any other menu link returned it to the default font size.

Can you increase your php memory to 48M and check if you still get the error
