is it possible to use a third party email server, such as mad mimi, or constant contact, together with civicrm ?

I’m not sure exactly how do these solutions work, and it depends on that. If you look at CiviSMTP, you’ll see it’s doable, but it most probably would require some work on the third party’s server to implement throughly.
