Install issues with Joomla and 2.1
August 12, 2008, 11:13:05 pm
I'm running on iPower.com

according to my vDeck:
Platform   Debian
MySQL Version    5.0.45
Perl    5.8.8
PHP    5.2.2

according to my Joomla admin panel
PHP Version:       5.2.4
Web Server:    Apache
Web Server to PHP interface:    cgi
Joomla! Version:    Joomla! 1.5.3 Production/Stable [ Vahi ] 22-April-2008 22:00 GMT

I verified that my php.ini settings matched "In your php.ini file or in .htaccess file in the Joomla root folder (if your server allows it), increase the max_execution_time to 600 and memory limit to more than 32M." from http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Install+2.1+for+Joomla

I downloaded civicrm-2.1.alpha1-joomla.zip, and unzipped it.  I tried to install from my unzip directory: /home/users/web/b2773/ipw.[accountname]/public_html/aver/civicrm-2.1-joomla/com_civicrm, but after about 20 seconds -- got this error:
[500 Internal Server Error]
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.

Error log is empty.

My components menu does not have any entry for CiviCRM.

When I made a second install attempt -- I got the following error:
        * Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/hermes/bosweb/web277/b2773/ipw.[accountname]/public_html/aver/components/com_civicrm"
        * Component Install: Another Component is already using directory: "/hermes/bosweb/web277/b2773/ipw.[accountname]/public_html/aver/administrator/components/com_civicrm"

I just poked through the directories via my FTP client -- contents of the administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm directory:
api/ (v2/ + 13 files)
bin/ (25 files)
CRM/ (ACL-Contact -- Contact died at Form/Relationship.php)
agpl-3.0.txt
civicrm.config.php

there are only two files in the components directory:
civicrm.html.php
civicrm.php

Total file count:
administrator/components/com_civicrm = 212 files / 37 directories
components = 2 files

compared to 5903/1080 in the .zip

There is likewise no entry for CiviCRM in the components table of my database.

Any other server settings I should be checking to get this thing to fully install?  I've gone through [partial install failure / delete com_civicrm dir's / start over from scratch] 3 times now.  Whatever this is seems to be settings related, not fluke.  Is it possible to finish the install by hand or is that just too insane?

The 500 Internal Server Error is a very general HTTP status code that means something has gone wrong on the server but the server could not be more specific on what the exact problem is.

If you have received this error only once try to re-install making sure com_civicrm dir's are not present. And try with both kind of packages that is unzipped & zipped one.

We would not recommend manual process but if you want to experiment there are some related posts from community (you 'll need to search).

I've gone through [partial install failure / delete com_civicrm dir's / start over from scratch] 3 times now.
First try with max_execution_time at 600, it died at 297 files.
Second try -- I reset my php.ini to 300 (what it had been), and it died at 643 files.
Third try -- set back to 600, and it died at 212 files as stated above.

Still at 600, I tried again today with Alpha1 to see if maybe it was my host that was having problems last night.

I uploaded the .zip and unzipped via my vDeck.

After 45 seconds, again I got the error:
The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.

it got all the way up to CRM/Pledgebank/Import/Form/Summary.php
824 files / 165 directories

I have tried Alpha2 twice now and it dies after only 12 seconds.
both tries -- zero files / zero directories; zero entries in components table.

Same 500 error every time.  No output has never been so accurate.
