email templates don't appear when emailing a contact?
June 13, 2007, 10:10:10 pm
Hi,
I have email templates created and enabled but they are not appearing in the drop down when I try to email a contact?

any ideas?

I hadn't used this function before upgrading to .9682 so don't know if it was working before.

So, you're saying that you can add and edit Message Templates from the admin control panel, but when you go to view a contact and select "Send Email" - the form doesn't have the "Select Template" select field?

Are your other "ajax" elements working in the site (advanced search panes for Address, Relationships etc. expand when clicked; quick search autocomplete block works, etc.)?

If you enable Debugging (Global Settings) - and then add &smartyDebug=1 to the URL when viewing the Send Email form - does the Smarty Debug pop-up window include form elements like the one below?

Code: [Select]
template => Array (8)
  name => template
  value => empty
  type => select
  frozen =>
  required =>
  error => empty
  label => <label for="template">Select Template...

Thanks for your help guys,

Fixed this one too by upgrading to 1.7.9821 in the correct way. ie untaring on the server and not uploading the whole civicrm directory.  :-[

Now I can get some work done.

Dear Friends:

I am having the same issue and am willing to reinstall if that might solve it.  I would love to understand more what might be happening.  The demo CIVICRM menu shows templates correctly (with a nice fade effect).  I am showing templates in my Message Templates area and they are all enabled.  If I enter a new template name and click "SAVE AS NEW TEMPLATE", it is properly saved to the database.  My smarty debug message is attached below and seems to show my template array data is available.  But the behavior I get is a dead down arrow and an undefined message in the subject after clicking it.  Thanks for your help,

Charles

Charles:

You might want to upgrade to the latest 1.7 and check if that fixes the issue. Also are the other ajax elements working in your install (search / tabs)

Dear Donald:

Thanks so much for the fast reply.  I upgraded my CiviCRM to the latest stable release (1.7.9821).  This version number now shows on the footer of CiviCRM functions so I think it is fully loaded and operational.  I did not restart the server or anything more drastic, so perhaps ajax.php is still using the old version.  In any case, the behavior remains the same: the email template selector turns the proper ajax/theme enabled blue, but does not pull down to reveal my templates.  On the second or third click, undefined is dumped in the subject line but no further behavior can be found.  The html form created by the PHP looks identical to the demo site's html.  I have attached it here.  Any other advice would be great.  I will look into bringing my drupal version to the latest.  Any other advice would be most welcome...  I have attached a screen shot of the broken template screen too in case that gives you a clue to the behavior issue.

Does ajax work on your system? do the other screens like contact view, advanced search render properly?

also can u also check the apache error log and see if there are any errors being thrown by the script that fetches the message templates

thanx

Dear Donald:

Thanks again for the quick reply!  I checked the log and found this:

PHP Fatal error:  session_start() [<a href='function.session-start'>function.session-start</a>]: Failed to initialize storage module: user (path: ) in /var/www/html/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/ajax.php on line 3, referer: http://www.shranh.org/civicrm/group/search?_qf_Email_display=true&qfKey=aa77e4310cb99c8d20c4d794f26cbc68

I am trying to figure out what it means and how to fix it, but thought I would post it here in case you have seen it before.  I compared my advanced search and contact panel to the demo site and found them to work well and the same (see attached screen shots).  My only clue is that the email template is the only one that uses this particular combo box (blue) with the fade effect, but that might be irrelevant.  All the other combo boxes are the standard browser chrome.  Thanks so much for your help.

for some ideas on where and how to solve that problem

Dear Donald:

I so appreciate the links: I did search google for a piece of the error message, but was missing the crucial session keyword that got me to just the right fixes.  My php.ini had the session handler set to user not files.  I changed it, confirmed that /tmp was writable, and voila the ajax combo box and the template system worked perfectly.  I so appreciate your working me through the layers of CiviCRM, drupal, and finally PHP.  This forum is great!  I hope someday to be able to contribute and not just benefit from the advice.  Many thanks!
