Dashboard activities funtionality?
August 18, 2008, 02:38:18 pm
Greetings!

I see that my user dashboard has a shortlist of recent activities, but I have noticed something...
If I have a activity assigned to another staff member - ie call someone - and they respond by noting that they left a message;
once that has occurred the activity appears to drop out of existence, without demanding a followup

I see that I can go to the staff member in question and pull up their contact profile and click the activity tab... I can see all activities at a glance, completed, left message, no response etc.
I wonder if it might be more expedient to have full activity report on our dashboard - mine only appears to have scheduled activities listed.

I would like to know if I am missing something here - Is there any way to change the personal dash to have full breakdown of activities and responses?

Any help would be most appreciated

The behavior your seeing is "by design". Scheduled activities for all contacts are displayed in the Home dashboard to "administrator level" folks. The thinking here is that showing all contact's activities regardless of status would create a huge list for most sites and be unwieldy.

I suspect the ideal solution down the road would be to add some filters to dashboard (e.g. status, date range, etc.).

Yes, I agree, a list of all activities would be cumbersome - and a filter would work perfect!

Is this something that you may be able to aid me in accomplishing?

Thank you Dave for your lightning fast response time to my post :)

one other thing that I would suggest: when viewing a scheduled activity such as a scheduled phone call - it would be expedient to have a several action buttons in replace of "done" which would change the status on exit - ie: completed, left message etc. rather than requiring changes of status with the "edit" function. In tandem it would be helpful to have the names present (with:person, assigned to:person etc) linked to user info that could appear by mouseover or popup when clicked - as this would make the required details available (ie:phone number) to accomplish the task at hand.

Implementing a filter will require non-trivial changes to the underlying php code / queries for that screen. If you have those resources and are interested in moving this forward - I would recommend that you write-up a detailed proposal for how you think it should work (filter criteria, layout changes, defaults, etc.) and post back here.

We can then point you to some resources to get started finding your way around the code etc.

Dashboard Activity filtering seems like a critical functional addition if people are to use the Activity system effectively (or give them a continued desire to use it).

Has anything more happened on this topic ?

Not yet :-(
Spec + patch or sponsorship welcome ...

Possibly related... 3.1 will include the ability for each user to configure "dashboard widgets" for their home page (which are basically (civi-)report instances).  I think each user could potentially create a report instance from the Activity Report which filters "their" activities in the way they'd like to see them.
