General Question about Standalone Version
August 19, 2008, 05:28:43 pm
I have CiviCRM integrated into my Joomla 1.5 site (it is a fantastic component).  I am a little unclear on how the standalone version works.  Is it possible to establish multiple standalone versions on local computers where "Membership Administrators" could access the main, remotely-stored CiviCRM database?  This would be great since it would eliminate the need to give these administrators access to the Joomla backend.

Thanks for any response.

Chapmanla,

Thank you for your kind words about CiviCRM. :-)

Standalone works the same way as Drupal/Joomla versions, it's just not integrated with any CMS. Therefore, I think it's not suited for the case you're describing.

Thx,
m

The real question is whether multiple stand alone installs can share the same mysql db...

Can we conclude that two stand alone installs cannot share the same mysql db?

Based on another forum thread, i dont think so. Seems like we messed this up when we moved all settings to the db.

We'll do a rethink and potentially come out with a fix for 2.2, if trivial we'll backport the fix to 2.1 :) (I dont think its trivial, there might be some db changes needed since we need to store multiple copies of variable that are local to each of the "multi-site")

Considering that this has been broken for the past 5 releases, i'm not too sure that its important and/or we should even fix it

Well, I can only speak for myself... in the past I have used drupal multisite with a single CiviCRM db.

I have sites in development I was planning to use CiviCRM for, but now will just rely on drupal shared tables.

The case of a single Joomla site + a stand alone CiviCRM site pointed at the same database seems to take care of the back end/ front end problem in joomla. But I've never run into this problem using drupal since between drupal permissions and ACLs you can give access to the CiviCRM back end without giving access to the drupal back end.

I suspect that the actual need is slight, but the use cases of multiple websites, each with a independent civicrm interface, backing onto the same CiviCRM mysql database are pretty compelling (fundraising microsites, personal fundraising sites, nonprofits with lots of affiliates, etc..

This is actually a need we have just encountered (in the UK) with two high level organisations (L1), each of which have many client organisations (L2). Their clients in turn oversee and support many hundreds of voluntary sector groups (L3). The ideal solution to this would be to have one civicrm for all contact data controlled by L1, multiple drupal sites for each L2 org (with ACL/profile controls on who sees/does what in Civi), then multiple organic group micro-sites within each drupal for some of the L3 orgs.

If this could be achieved (and there will probably be some funding available) we could probably see several other organisations on a similar level to these 'L1' orgs take up CiviCRM as a solution to their contact management. There are some additional requirements which I will define more clearly and post in the relevant place but which probably largely overlap with the USPIRG Project. Will that also call for something similar in terms of shared CiviCRM/multisite Drupal?

Once you have your requirements and funding lined up let us know and we can potentially add this feature(s) into core as a consulting project

Hi Lobo
we now have some funding lined up for this project based on your previous estimate. The feature set is fairly simple I think: just need to be able to have several Drupal sites using the same Civi db so they can have profile searches in the Drupal sites and users carry their logins across from one to the other. Although there may be a complication in that this is part of a larger project in which the orgs who have the Drupals, will have separated data in Civi using the new nested groups stuff. Hopefully that doesn't create too much additional headache.

Where's the best place to continue this discussion.

Can you spec it out more completely on a new wiki page and we can take it from there. You will need to think a bit more about permissioning and how different orgs will use the data in the common CRM etc

I've written this up a bit more on http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Multiple+Drupals+with+single+CiviCRM - please let me know where you need any more detail.
