Employe field on a contact
August 20, 2008, 09:37:07 am
Hi,

Modifying an individual without a employer, choose existing employer (but don't select one), got a fatal error upon saving, something about keys (not understandable by non dev).

I suppose that it tries to create a relationship to a non defined organisation, hence the failure.

Suggestion: if the id is empty, consider that equals to no employee and silently discard

Improved interface suggestion  :
Don't put the radio buttons to choose if existing organisation or create a new one (I don't know if the organisation exists already anyway):

only the auto-complete field.
if the user select an organisation, then only add the relationship, if it doesn't and type an org, create it.

(probably good to add a "(new organisation)" vs. "(existing organisation)" information msg next to the field

Xavier,

I couldn't reproduce your scenario on public sandbox. Make sure you're running off the latest code - there was an error in current employer functionality which was actually causing a fatal error, has been fixed before latest alpha.

Otherwise, if it persists, we need exact error name  as Kurund suggested - and more detailed testcase would be helpful as well.

As for your suggestion: auto-complete field actually works as your describe - if you put in the name of organisation which doesn't exist in the database, it will be created.

I'll discuss your UI suggestion with Dave - could you file an "Improvement" issue in the tracker, so it doesn't dissolve and disappear in between other fixes?

Thx,
m

Hi,

As for the error msg: I was updating svn, without recreating the db, might be related.

As for the issue, will fill it later today.

Xavier - we've reviewed the changes needed to implement your suggestion (combining "select existing" and "create new") and I've filed the issue:

http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3438

I do think this is a good usability improvement - thanks for the thoughtful input.

Re: Employee field on a contact-Organization/Individual Relationships

It would be extremely helpful if the Documentation stated that entering an Organization Name in an Individual's Contact record for Current Employer auto-creates a new Organization Contact. I personally don't like this feature very much, because I foresee tons of duplicate Organization records being created by people misspelling or entering different version of Organization names. (I only found out about this feature because I did this myself  :D .)

I would rather simply have the option to choose from existing Organizations.

Another thing I would suggest is to have the Organization Nickname as an option for the Current Employer; for instance it would be much more convenient to type "WWF" than World Wildlife Fund.

Thanks!  :)

P.S. I didn't see until after I posted that this is only for people testing v2.1, so sorry about that. If anyone can suggest a better place to move my comment, I would appreciate it. I think we're currently running v2.0.5 (or something like that-tech guy is gone for the day), but are thinking of upgrading soon.

You might want to see what the version on 2.1 does (http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/) and if you feel there is an improvement over 2.0

The good news is 2.1 has better dedupe, so you can merge all those duplicate orgs periodically
