CiviContribute widget ideas not problems
August 22, 2008, 09:31:02 pm
I just finished my upgrade from 1.8php4 to 2.0 and am trying out new things like CiviContribute Widgets. Since I found a few things I think could be improved, I took a look at the 2.1 version. I'm going to list all my thoughts, but I figure that most will have to be 2.2 or later, but some might be doable for 2.1 I you want I can repost the ones that can't be done easily in 2.1 as future feature requests.

1 - I like to experiment, but don't always like the results. It would be great if i could set the colors back to their default/starting values. Right now i think that if I haven't written them down, I'd have to start another new CiviContribute page and copy them back. Perfect would be reseting any single entry, but all at once would be OK

2 - While we can search the web and and then find the answer. It would be great i a little square swatch display the actual color that would be created by the Hex value entered.

3 - Maybe even a little color wheel or method to assist in choosing colors.

4 - Future feature(long term) - Preset color palettes to choose from. (Predefined and maybe even user create-able) Maybe a global override of default color settings to match an organizations colors and make it so that they don't have to be overridden each time.

5 - tell us when we might go over the max char limit for the about box in widget. It might not be possible to do an exact limit due to variable line lengths (Depends on word lengths). But a warning about absolute max length (assuming each line was full) would be nice

6 - Can size off widget be changed? Thinking of long descriptions that don't fit in the small box. Or maybe need to narrow a bit to fit on placement page. I'm guessing that this might be on your to-do list since i see related settings in the generated code. ( width="220" height="220" id="civicontribute-widget" )

But even without these things. Thanks again for the work you have done.

Thank for the detailed suggestions. I think all or most of these are reasonably do-able in 2.2. Can you add a 2.2. improvement issue to issues.civicrm.org with these 6 items listed. (Of course if you have resources to work on them - patches are most welcome).

OK, I'll make a 2.2 improvement issue for them.

But just in case I manage to get some free time and decide to tackle two of the easier ones (#2 & 3) myself while digging into JS. Your preferred JS toolkit is Dojo, am I correct? I found what looks like a nice plugin but its JQuery based and i don't want to increase the page load time with another toolkit for just one item (not to mention compatibility as they step n each other)

Yes - a dojo is the js toolkit we use for everything EXCEPT the WYSIWYG editor(s) - we integrated fckEditor and tinyMCE in 2.1 due to deficiencies in the dojo's RTE.
