importing large number of contacts

if I try to import a large number of contacts (say 490), the import says it successfully imported 490 contacts:

>Import has completed successfully. The information below summarizes the results.
>Total Rows    490    Total rows (contact records) in uploaded file.
>Records Imported    490    Rows imported successfully.

When I look at group I imported to, there are no contacts. However, there are about 40 contacts in the database but not in the specified group nor with the specified tag. Using CiviCRM 1.7.9379 with Drupal 5.7

Also, if I create a new group to import the records into, the new group is never created, although (again) about 40 contacts appear in the database, but are not associated with any group.

Import works perfectly with a small file of 5-10 records. any idea what is going on?

Can you try to replicate this on http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/.

Do consider upgrading to latest CiviCRM release. Its bit hard for us to support old versions.

Have you tried using different browsers? For some reason I have had more problems importing using FF than Safari.

I would like to upgrade CiviCRM to v.2, but I have been procrastinating since there are a few things I need to do first.

I will try a different browser and importing into the sandbox, and let you know... thanks
