Advice for upgrading from 2.1 Alpha 4 to 2.1 Beta 3??
September 04, 2008, 08:39:08 am
Hi, I'm launching a new Drupal/CiviCRM site this weekend. For various reasons I can't get into, I've chosen to go with Drupal 6.4/CiviCRM 2.1.

I currently have the 2.1 Alpha 4 version, and so far it seems to be working fairly smoothly, but I haven't done much with it yet. The client *needs* the site up & running by this weekend (which is why I'm not waiting for the final release), including importing several hundred contacts into the database.

My question is, how easy/difficult is it to upgrade from Alpha 4 to Beta 3, and how much risk do you forsee? I realize that both versions are "unstable/unreliable" to some degree (otherwise they wouldn't be Alphas/Betas!), but I'm looking for a general feeling about whether it's worth the effort/risk or not.

Also, can anyone give me a general idea of what has been fixed/improved between A4 and B3? I tried looking at the Issue Navigator, but it just gives the dates that issues were listed, not the version in which they were fixed (unless I'm not looking in the right place). Basically I'm just trying to determine whether it's worth the fuss and risk at this point, *before* I import all those contacts.

Thanks in advance...

1. Your best bet to see all the changes is to view the svn log. Our svn viewer fisheye has a bug and you cannot see this on the web right now. So you'll need to download an svn client and see the log messages. alternatively you can see all issues fixed for 2.1 in reverse order and match the dates with the various releases

2. there are a few minor db changes that were made between A4 and B3. your best bet would be to do a mysqldiff on the schemas

3. I'm 99% sure that all future changes will be code changes only. the db will not be changed unlesss we find a super critical bug
