Joomla upgrade 2.0 > 2.1 uninstall first

Just had a look at the Upgrade Joomla Sites to 2.1 wiki page http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+Joomla+Sites+to+2.1

This indicates that you can install over the top of an existing install.

Don't you have to uninstall the old version first?

1. Note the doc is for migration from 2.0 -> 2.1. And 2.0 was compatible /w Joomla v1.0.x only and 2.1 is compatible /w Joomla v1.5.x.

2. While doing Joomla upgrade/migration it's recommended to install Joomla 1.5 in a separate dir (refer - http://docs.joomla.org/Migrating_from_1.0.x_to_1.5_Stable) and then run the migration script.

3. After completing above step it is not expected to have civicrm installed /w Joomla 1.5 and hence no instructions for uninstalling the old ver is provided.

Does that make sense ?

No, it doesn't make sense as civiCRM can work with Joomla 1.5 (which is what I'm running it on) in legacy mode.

The install isn't working for me (I just get "please install from a package directory", which seems unrelated to having it already running, but maybe not.)
Thanks to those who help create and enhance civiCRM!
