removing bad emails
September 05, 2008, 06:27:02 pm
I am trying to remove a large number of bad emails. I have the contacts whose emails are bad in one group. I have tried importing a file with the contacts' name with the email field left blank or with a space in it and I can't get it to replace the current email in the file.  Any suggestions?

Hey chartglass. You can easily do this using the "batch update via profile" feature. Basically, create a profile with at least an email address field. Search for all the members of that group and then in the "more actions" menu, select "batch update via profile." and select the profile you just created. Erase the email in the first row, then hit copy to erase all the others in the set.

this should work fine.

THANKS!  It did work fine.  I had to repeat it 14 times to handle 1400 records but still very quick.

Cool. Glad it helped. I forgot to mention that doing a batch update, there is a limit of 100 contacts.

I wanted to report a problem I had with the batch edit I did here.  I followed the instructions and removed the emails.  But when I look at the individual contacts or do a search, the email address shows up without the contact's name. I have to go into each record individually and click edit and save and then the email is gone and the name reappears.  Is this a bug?

I tried to use the demo machine but perhaps I don't know what I am doing?  I clicked on the TRY IT NOW button and then Civicrm 2.1 with Drupal.  I tried to import data (I've done this many times, CSV file) and it was merging my three fields into one and giving me errors.  Then I tried to add contacts individually and it crashed.  So I would like to duplicate my problem but I don't know where to begin with the demo machine.  :-)

Hello,
Here is the direct link to the demo site: http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/. When you get the "home page", enter "demo" for both the username and password. Then, begin your testing.

Hope this helps,
Cynthia

Yes, this is where I went to try to use the demo machine and had all the problems.

I have had a similar problem with cells being conjoined on an import, and simply had to select all data, copy, open new csv and paste and resave. Something to do with how NeoOffice handles csv that have been closed and then reopened. Just in case that is same issue for you.

Thanks, that worked.  I tried the demo machine and could not reproduce the problem.  So I guess I am stuck.
