PHP 5.0 and CiviCRM 2.1
September 08, 2008, 01:58:07 pm
Hi,
We want to install CiviCRM 2.1 (we can wait for it to be out of beta) with PHP  5.0.4 and Joomla 1.5.  I noticed in the install guide that PHP 5.2.4 is "required" but immediately following that it says that, "Starting with the 1.9 release, CiviCRM will NOT run on PHP4 servers."  I'm wondering about that discrepancy.

I've installed CiviCRM 2.0 on this same server with Joomla 1.0 and I did have one problem, not being able to add a profile to the beginning of a contribution page. I'm wondering if there are any other snags or limitations?

Thanks,
thomas

We support PHP 5.2.x, i.e. all our development and test servers run PHP 5.2.x. Hence we can't verify how or if CiviCRM 2.1 will behave under 5.0.4.

We would also like to install 2.1 to get some extra features in the civicontribute module.

However we, like many people, are tied to Ubuntu 6.10 LTS on our VPS - It is still supported by Ubuntu for a good couple of years yet - it seems impossible to get past PHP5.1.2 with that OS - I have tried everything I can think of to upgrade it - any suggestions?

Some folks on our team our Ubuntu fans, so they may have some thoughts on this. Otherwise, I guess "try it and see".

From what i've seen you probably have to compile php 5.2 from source

the following links should be of some help

Hmmmmmm

Now that's not a quick job, and with plesk - may well turn out to be too hard.

It is a real shame that CiviCRM is not accessible to all those running one of the major, still fully supported, linux distributions - I have had no luck getting my host provider (webfusion) to change or upgrade their VPS OS - They are still providing 6.6LTS to new customers - as are other ISPs

I think it was an unfortunate decision from the developers to jump to 5.2 as a minimum requirement, rather than a reccomendation. It is stopping me from upgrading and accessing all their hard work!!

1. we like to provide pretty good support and are quite proud of our current support record :)

2. Supporting multiple versions of php  / mysql / drupal / joomla  is extremely expensive (exponetially). We currently support the latest version of each (php 5.2. mysql 5.0.x, drupal 6.x, joomla 1.5.x) which is one combination. if we support two versions of each of the above choices, we now have to support 8 combinations.

unfortunately we dont have the energy / resources / finances to do so :(

If there is a combination you think is important, and u'd like to support, u can step up and help folks with that along with the necessarty patches needed to make it work. We'd be happy to assist you
