Invalid key using Joomla and PayPal
September 08, 2008, 05:07:28 pm
I have reports from some users that they are receiving 'Invalid Key' when attempting to make a contribution/join/renew. Other users have had no problems. Anyone have any ideas?

Joomla 1.5.5
CiviCRM 2.0.4
MySQL 5.0.45
PHP 5.2.6

Screenshot attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I guess this a compatibility issue since CiviCRM v2.0.x is not officially supported on Joomla v1.5.x, and has been fixed for CiviCRM v2.1.

I would strongly recommend to either use compatible Joomla (v 1.0.x) with your existing CiviCRM v2.0.x. OR if you want to use Joomla v1.5.x, consider upgrading CiviCRM to v2.1. (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrade+Joomla+Sites+to+2.1)

Why this was moved to an 'installation issue' I have no idea. Especially since I have had civiCRM up and running for about 3 months on Joomla 1.5 in legacy 1.0 mode.

It is not an installation issue, and if there was a 'non-support' issue, it should not have been advertised as compatable on sourceforge and the Joomla site as legacy mode compatable.

I sincerely doubt is is a versioning issue, but if you want to blow it off like that, feel free.

thanks for nothing.

1. I dont think we've advertised that CiviCRM 2.0 works with Joomla 1.5. We have mentioned that some folks have gotten it to work. We have also stated that J1.5 support will be available from 2.1 only in multiple places across the forums. If we have advertised this somewhere, please let us know and we'll fix it

2. We guessed that this might be related to an installation issue, and hence moved it here.

3. Would help everyone involved if you responded with a better attitude. The support (along with the product) you are getting is for free / no-cost. So we do appreciate if folks are kind and respectful to each other. On this topic, we are considering adopting a code of conduct :) You can read more about it here: http://civicrm.org/blog/

Yes, I agree we should be respectful.

I posted this on the 'contribute' topic for two reasons:

1) there is an existing post from back in Jan (http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,2037.0.html) that had the same problem which had never been replied to. The warning advised me to start a new topic.

2) civiCRM had been up and running in prod since june. The paypal had been working since mid july. The vast majority of people had no problems. The first invalid key report was made on aug 20, it was not until yesterday that another user reported an identical problem. Successful tranactions have occurred before between and since the two reports I have received. Does that sound like an installation issue to you?

I consider the responses and actions on this issue so similar to the behavior I have often recieved from Microsoft and HP as to be indistinguishable. As a software designer and developer (HPUX, Java, WebLogic, Oracle) of national level systems for the last 10 years, I dislike being blown off.

Respect me, and I will certainly repect you.

this has been fixed. There was also a Note at the bottom about the team not supporting J1.5 but some folks have gotten parts/most of it to work

With regard to your problem, we are not sure why that is happening. While it does not sound like an installation issue, it does not sound like a contribution issue either. In general the invalid key message is thrown when there is a problem with the session/cookie.

If you manage to debug this and figure it out, please let us know the problem and potential workarounds

Thank you!

Gives me a clue. I have been approaching this from the civiCRM and PayPal side, but this makes we wonder if it is a Joomla issue, instead. I will post my results.

I can attest that it does indeed work with J1.5...and rather well, too. This is the first real problem I have had (other than minor php & mysql tweaks) Anyone not needing a payment system should be able to use it quite easily.

Good code, and thanks again.

I have an Invalid Key intermittently when using CiviContribute.  I am using Joomla 1.5.7 and CiviCRM 2.1

Is there any resolution for this or in the near future?  I just can't have my donation page intermittently working.

My only other option is to set up VirtueMart and try to make a donation system out of that which sucks, CiviContribute is just what I need, please help.

Thanks

you can help out by trying to get some more details on this and see if you can find a pattern of common conditions when this happens. Its kinda hard for us to debug/fix intermittent issues without more information (which is hard to get for the user also)
