CiviCRM Error Reporting
September 12, 2008, 09:22:24 am
I apologize if there is a thread about this, or an issue about this, or some good docs somewhere. I am having trouble finding info about this, so here is a new thread.

I am very interested in error reporting in CiviCRM. Is there any kind of plan to have error logging integrated in way that is similar to Drupal's watchdog/dblog approach?

So far I have found this page: http://osdir.com/ml/crm.civicrm.devel/2007-05/msg00099.html
The text on that page is a bit jarbled for me, so I can't find a date anywhere, and I don't know how up-to-date it is.

And I know there is this module for D5: http://drupal.org/project/civicrm_error
I have an issue in the queue there to find out if it's going to get upgraded to 6.

So what are the plans, if any, to have a built-in error logging system with CiviCRM? While I think it would be great for it to hook in directly to watchdog and the joomla equivalent, I also wonder about just having a CiviCRM reporting tool as well that you can get to through Administer CiviCRM. This would log all error specific to CiviCRM in the same way that Watchdog works.

Looking for input here....I am happy to file an issue if it hasn't already been done.

I think upgrading civicrm_error to D6 is your best bet for now

We log all errors in CiviCRM.log. I suspect in a future version, we'll create a table and do db logging

For something like this we'd strongly encourage a patch along with an issue. Extending civicrm_error to log into drupals watchdog table is the preferred method for drupal (i dont know if joomla has an error table)

ok, in that case, can you tell by looking at this how old/what version of civi it is from? http://osdir.com/ml/crm.civicrm.devel/2007-05/msg00099.html

says rev 2791 and i apologize for not really understanding how to look that up on fisheye and if that's even the same thing as rev 2791 on fisheye.

since it looks like this is already some kind of patch, i'd like to start from here if possible :)

most likely that was the civicspace svn repository which is not related to the civicrm svn repository. so the version numbers will not match

If i had to guess that was either 1.7 or so (middle of last year). However u would need to generalize that patch so we can use something similar for joomla / standalone
