J1.5 make a profile? garbled J1&J1.5 mixed instructions?

I'm figuring UR aware that the "Create a Profile" instructions are a mixed jumble of cryptic details for J 1 AND J1.5.  The result is I cannot do the steps as written.  The one "Profile Create" eludes me?

I have a CivicCRM article listed in the chosen menu, I have followed the garbled instructions thru Adminstration Components/CiviCRM/Adminster CiviCRM/CivicRM Profile/ *I chose "Search Results" (on a hunch?).  ID 108  contains the HTML form created as I did the steps from about step 4  as I made the new profile.  Preview shows the form, Yet? When I go to the frontpage/Menu and try to bring up the form I get>>>

The requested Profile (gid=108) is disabled OR it is not configured to be used for 'Profile' listings in its Settings OR there is no Profile with that ID OR you do not have permission to access this profile. Please contact the site administrator if you need assistance.

I contacted Me, the site administrator,  but Me had no clue?

I also tried profile way back in Settings, same miserable results.  ID 108 is your FORM to create a profile NOT a profile itself??  it is enabled.  SuperAdmin has permissions,  Of course there is NO profile yet? that is exactly what the form I created in ID 108 is supposed to make? so ... How exactly would one "not configured to be used for 'Profile' listings in its Settings" outside of CiviCRM where ID 108 is? There will be a profile with some ID# but not the form which creates it ID108... round and round nuthin clear .... any thoughts, or clear step by step instructions for J 1.5 beyond the ones in CivicCRM site?
thanks much for your direction

This message occurs if the user doesn't have permission to edit the profile in question via the acl screen

ACL permissioning is not the issue -- ACL is not active in Joomla installs.

I took a quick look at the profile docs and nothing jumped out at me as problematic. There are still some instructions for J1.0, but they are clearly delineated from the standard J1.5 instructions. I don't think you're understanding the concepts.

There are two steps:
1) create profile
2) create link to profile in Joomla (menu item)

To create the profile, go to Administer CiviCRM > CiviCRM Profile > Add one
Then walk through the creation of profile fields. A profile is simple a collection of existing fields which can then be used for search forms, data entry forms, data edit forms, listings, etc. You define each field included in a given profile through this interface, and define the settings for each field (searchable, view only, visible in selector, etc.).

Once you've completed your profile, go back to the main profile manage page. You'll see an id number associated with that specific profile. Write it down.

To create the menu link to this profile, go to your menu in Joomla, add a CiviCRM menu item, choose the type of CiviCRM page you want (e.g. Profile Search) and put the id number you wrote down in the appropriate setting box.

There are a couple screencast tutorials for creating a profile as well:
