Permission issues with template_c when upgrading 1.4 to 2.0 for Joomla
September 14, 2008, 01:06:27 pm
Hey there,

Through this form and the help docs I was able to navigate the very rocky road of attempting to upgrade from CiviCRM 1.4 to 2.0 for Joomla. We're running Joomla 1.0.15. The only thing I'm worried about in terms of the overall upgrade was that I had to turn off foreign key checks to get the database updated, but hasn't been a problem yet.

At the end of the install, I was attempting to delete the temp files in /media/civicrm/templates_c/ and /media/civicrm/upload/ per the upgrading instructions when I ran into a permissions issue: they had both been created with Owner 90. I tried using the URL-based cleanup solution for these files (appending the &DirectoryCleanup=3 tool) but that didn't do it.

We're using a hosting reseller, so I don't have the shell access or permissions to do a CHOWN. I put in a trouble ticket, the tech CHOWN'd the directories for me, and I deleted the files. Once they did, however, I got the following error when I try to navigate to the CiviCRM component:

Fatal error: Smarty error: unable to write to $compile_dir '/home/usasnet/public_html/media/civicrm/templates_c/en_US/en_US'. Be sure $compile_dir is writable by the web server user. in /home/usasnet/public_html/administrator/components/com_civicrm/civicrm/packages/Smarty/Smarty.class.php on line 1095

I'm going to ask them to CHOWN the dirs *back* to 90, because then I can at least get to the CiviCRM main menu -- but I also recall getting permissions errors about these directories beforehand.

So, who does CiviCRM want to own those folders?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, this has taken a long time already and I thought I was nearing the finish line.

Thanks!
-Max

This folder should have writable permissions. So i guess chmod -R 777 should work.
