Creating a new Contact entity for Position/Office

Picking up on peterd's post of May 2008 http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/New+contact+type+for+Position+or+Office

Suggestion: set up a new 'contact type' which is for a Position/Office (examples would include Mayor of City, President of Country, Minister (political), Chair of Organisation, CEO of Company, Principal of School, local secretary of the branch of a national organisation etc.)
This new Contact Type then has a relationship to the Individual specified as well as one to the Organisation. The latter would rarely change, the former would change each time a new person takes on that role.

Has anyone implemented peterd's suggestion? We have a lot of contact info where 'The Director' is the addressee, so this would be useful.

Thanks, Robin

I don't think progress has happened on this front.... and I suspect some workflow issues would need to be addressed to make this truly useful. The 2.0+ schema makes things a bit easier because all contacts are stored in the same civicrm_contact table regardless of "type".

Note that you can manually implement this with the current version IF you have an Email address for the position:
- create Individual record for the position, with Title and Email filled in
- create Organization record
- create Individual (office holder) contact record
- create new Relationship Type - "Office / Office of" to connect "position" to "organization"
- and another Relationship Type to connect office holder to office.

You could then implement a custom search which grabs data from the appropriate records in order to spit out a CSV file for mail merges, etc.
