Can tags have custom fields?

Is it possible (without hacking core) to extend CiviCRM tags with additional metadata? Basically I want to apply custom fields to tags just like I would to contacts or relationships.

Can you give a more detailed example? I'm not sure i understand exactly what you're after since custom fields are part of individual/organizational records which also have tags.

It might be nice to be able to group or categorize tags so I can control which ones show up where and when. I understand that may be against the "spirit of tagging", but nonetheless...

Thanks. Tag visibility control/hierarchical organization would address part but not all of my problem. I basically want to layer richer information on top of a tag. Very domain-specific, thus hard to explain. Will probably end up building my own external mechanism and using the tag API to integrate the two. Assuming I do that, can I use CiviCRM custom search to search against data in an external system and use those results to refine a native CiviCRM search?

The custom search framework is pretty flexible - and you will be hand-constructing the query / queries used - so depending on how the external data can be accessed, you should be able to integrate it in the search. (If the data is stored in "other tables" in the same DB as CiviCRM - this should be quite straightforward.)
