Automatic emails not sent after member registration

I have a membership signup profile running on a Joomla site. It is set to send an automatic email to the person signing up and to the administrator when the form is completed. Neither of these emails appears to be sent (at least nothing is ever received), but if I manually select a Contact and choose 'Send email to contact' it works perfectly, so my SMTP settings appear to work. I've trawled through everything and can't find an obvious reason - any ideas??

You can configure profile to send email to Administer, but not user who is registering. Check Profile >> Advanced Settings "Notify when profile form is submitted?" feature.

Hi
Yes I've got that option selected. The email to the user is the receipt that can be sent automatically when payment is made. The problem is that neither of these is getting through (even though the smtp details seem to be set correctly)

you might want to ensure that the membership signup page has the a valid from "Receipt From Email" on the page similar to the one below

Yup, I've got the receipt email already set up :-\
Still neither it nor the 'profile submitted'  email are sent :'(, though 'manual' emails to contacts go fine

If it is an email that is precipitated after the Payment is processed then could it be something that is failing to happen post the payment processor. I think we have this problem also but have not dug deeply due to all sorts of other priorities as the election looms ;-)

Possibly, but then i'd expect the 'profile submitted' email still to be sent.I'll try turning off the receipt email and see if that changes anything

You should check if your smtp provider likes the "from receipt email". Many smtp systems reject email if they do not "recognize" the from email address

No, that's OK as well. I tried changing all the 'from' email addresses to valid ones that were 'known' to the server but still nothing comes through. And when I send an email to a contact manually it successfully sends although it's set to come from an 'unknown' email address. ??? ???
