If someone unsubs from List A, but is on List B, and we civiMail to A+B?

Hi. i think the answer is obvious, but if someone unsubs from list A, and then later on we have a mailing that is sent to List A and List B (which they are also on) then i presume they will get the email - and therefore we need to be careful about how we employ multiple lists in emailings?

That is my understanding. I think the way that I would get around it (if you didn't want anyone from List B who doesn't want to be in List A anymore) is put folks who  have unsubscribed into their own additional group and then use the exclude box on the new mailing page.

but the question itself is interesting, because even if someone unsubscribed from  list a but didn't unsubscribe from list b, and you are sending a mailing that is pertinent to list a AND list b, then why shouldn't they get it?

so in civimail, an unsubscribe will unsubscribe the contact from ALL the groups that the mailing was sent to.We figured that it was better to be safe and complete in this regard

The user can remove him/her self from a group in the user dashboard. this basically unsubscribes the user from that group

if the user belong to two groups in a subscribed state in group A and unsubscribed state in group B, i think the user will get the mailing since it is in valid state in group B. Would be good to actually test this theory out :)

Hah - indeed. Simply because we haven't yet managed to rationalise the extraordinary complexity of this set up - 200+ mailing lists running from several different custom groups all of which have 50+ custom fields etc etc - and I anticipate there will be some 'slip-ups' while we try and nail things down. That and the fact that the new system means we are now communicating to people who have long forgotten why/how they ever signed up.

Maybe I should ask the question with a 2.1 hat on.

If we send a mailing to a Parent Group and someone gets it because they are on the Child Group will the unsub unsub them from the child group?

(our systems are likely to be hugely improved when we can move to hierarchical groups)

I think in 2.1 it will actually remove them from the parent group and not the child group. This can probably be argued as buggy. In 2.1 we treat hierarchy very similar to smart groups, hence this behavior

I will think about this and whether it would suggest a slightly different emphasis on how we sign people up. cheers
