CiviCRM in London Ontario?
September 19, 2008, 12:10:32 pm
Are there any not-for-profit organizations using CiviCRM in the London, Ontario, Canada region?

I work for an agency in London who is looking for a CRM solution but we have no IT person.  I tried to download the demo but I believe it needs Joomla! or Drupal to operate.  I downloaded Joomla! to my desktop thinking it would work as a demo but Joomla (installation php) wouldn't open.

Am I correct in thinking that the CiviCRM demo also needs to be loaded onto the server and the server has to be equipped with mySQL and/or php before anything will run?

Although the agency desperately needs a CRM solution they (as usual) have no funds to put towards this.  That's why I'm researching the "free" solutions after choking on the prices of the for-fee programs.

Do I need to get IT training in all of this just to download a demo?  Help will really be appreciated.

CiviCRM is a web-server application which needs PHP and MySQL and a web-server to run. However there is a public "demo" online which you can use to explore the features - http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/

... along with some screencasts at:

Thanks Dave.  I looked around the main site for quite a while and didn't find this demo.  But I will pass this higher up.
So it looks like we need to find someone with a lot more experience than I in matters of CMS and php and mySQL.
CiviCRM itself looks great and I think would be ideal.  Is there a Volunteer Module available or would an agency just use the contacts area?

There is not (yet) a dedicated "Volunteer Management" module. But organizations are definitely using the existing contact, custom field, profile and activity features to manage volunteers.
