Question about 1.6 -> 1.7 upgrade
June 24, 2007, 09:36:47 am
Hi all - I am about to upgrade my 1.6 CiviCRM site - I have read the upgrade instructions several times now.  The instructions say that I should put the 1.7 code in the <drupal root>/sites/all directory..........I currently have my 1.6 code in the DRUPAL modules directory in the CiviCRM folder ------ is this (the <drupal root>/sites/all direcory) going to be THE NEW location of CiviCRM and not the DRUPAL modules directory?  Also - can someone further explain why I need to run the upgrade script and then dump the data and create a new database?  My current installation database has other tables in it for other things (like the Drupal installation) besides CiviCRM (this is a installation that I inherited) and I am wondering if I should create a seperate database just for CiviCRM and how difficult will that be.........

My thinking is to copy the entire database and name the copy something likeCiviCRM_data and then delete the DRUPAL tables from the copy and leave just the CiviCRM tables then run the updates ( or I can run the updates on the old table and then perform the copy procedure) - all these are just thoughts on how to get this upgrade accomplished

The <drupal_root>/sites/all/modules is the recommended place to install non-core modules by Drupal 5.x. Hence we recommend that location.

Your plan for using a different db for civicrm is a good one (IMO). Either option is ok, but do ensure you have a complete and verified backup before making ANY changes. We have renamed all foreign keys (to make future upgrades significantly easier) and hence require the "dump and create new db" procedure
