Allowing users to determine if their public profile is visible or not

Anyone suggest the easiest route for allowing a user/member to be able to 'hide' their public profile? So their Profile is showing the data that is available on Public pages, but the user can opt to hide their profile so it is not visible on Public pages?

How about putting all contacts in a group that "might" be exposed by this public profile - and setting the Limit Listings to Group property on that profile. Then folks could hide their record by removing themselves (unsubscribing) from that group.
