Register but DON't login to Paypal
September 24, 2008, 11:50:06 am
I just got our install of CiviEvent running, and there's one thing I'm not happy with -- I can't seem to get things to the point where someone could register and pay for an event without actually logging in to Paypal.  Previously, on our website (before we started using CiviCRM), it was not a problem to set up a Paypal "buy now" button that would not require Paypal registration.
Is this a possibility with CiviEvent (and/or CiviContribute, for that matter), or will we have to choose between requiring our patrons to register with Paypal, or not using Civicrm for event registrations?

CiviCRM supports 3 flavors of PayPal integration - each of which works differently with regard to PayPal behavior. Which are you using?

* PayPal Pro: transaction happens via API - under the covers - and the user never sees a PayPal site at all)
* PayPal Express and PayPal Website Payments Standard - user get's taken to PayPal site to either login or enter their credit card info

Probably good idea for you to research which "service" you used in your other site.

Hi,

I am using Paypal standard for our site. Paypal standards allows people to pay with or without creating an account and logging in. However, it tries to get people to sign up and it seems to present a different screen if it thinks you have an account (based on your e-mail address or cookies? - not sure which). The option to pay without logging in / creating an account is always there but it is often not obvious and even some very competent users have failed to figure it out.

For the above reasons and also due to the fact I can get a cheaper rate through Westpac and because I don't think Paypal is secure enough (too easy to retrieve your password if you forget it) I am moving to a different processor.

Thanks, Dave, for pointing me down the right road.  I switched the PaypalPro option in CiviCRM, and that now allows me to show the option for people to pay directly on my site, without having to login to Paypal.  We don't currently have a secure server, however, so it's not exactly my ideal solution.

Previously, the "buy now" buttons would take people off to Paypal's site, where they could either just pay, or they could login and pay (thus using paypal's https, instead of ours). Then they would be returned to our site.  Is this not possible when running it through CiviCRM?

One other thing - I found paypal behaved differently on the test account than on the live account.

Interestingly, I've just now discovered that, since my org is a non-profit, our web hosting will provide us with a free ssl certificate, so this may be a moot point, but I am still interested to know if it is possible to route buyers through paypal's site, instead of our own.

we were certainly routing through Paypal before we went for another provider, got a screen as per image that offered Credit Card on left or Login to Paypal account on right

Both the PayPal Website Payments Standard and PayPal Express options in CiviCRM work that way.

This image is what someone who paypal recognises gets - note on the left hand side if you click on 'continue' you get to the screen like Peter's screenshot. You don't need to log in but it looks like you do.
