Looking to upgrade this component to the new v1.7

I am a newbie in the Joomla world but have been building our first site using Joomla and the CiviCRM component for the last few months and am pretty comfortable using most of its features. Would like to upgrade to 1.7 and am wondering if there are any specific steps we need to take to insure a smooth install? Backing up the db is a given but need to know if there's anything else?

Thanks for any help
