Is there a way to get group update automatically?

Hi-

I have a long listing of members. Some have email addresses, some don't.

I created "email_blast" group to include members that have email addresses by using the search builder and use the following:

Include contacts where:

Individual, Email, Primary, IS NOT NULL

This works fine, it creates a group of all people with email addresses but..... the next time around, I would have to repeat this process as the database will have grown. Is there anyway I can let the group automatically do this? Maybe by setting a CRON job every 24 hours? I'm new to this so any help would be appreciated!

When you do you search using Search Builder you should use More Actions to then create a 'Smart Group" which acts like a recorded search, so the next time you email that group it will include anyone whose criteria match the search.

Also I tend to just put % in the email field in Adv Search to get all emailable contacts. HTH

That's what I thought smart groups did --- and I did test it out. The number of members in my smart group remained the same even after I added in a couple "dummy" members. I'll try it again. Or maybe it's a timing thing?

Can you try to reproduce this on our demo machine (http://demo.civicrm.org/). we've added caching of smart groups in 2.1 and the cache might not be getting refreshed properly (which is a bug). If you can reproduce on demo, please file an issue giving the steps you did, and we'll fix it in the next point release etc
