I was unable to see the option to have a profile automatically add to a group.

Am I missing something or is there something wrong with my install?

I was able to set the value in the database, so it's working as designed, but I wondered if it's a bug or just my install.

You should see a clickable gray bar "Advanced Settings" toward the bottom of your settings screen - as you can see here on the demo:
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/uf/group?action=update&id=1

If this isn't showing up, first guess is that your Resource URL settings aren't correct (which causes jscript-based functionality to fail).
Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Resource URLs
