Tables - define which does what?

Is there a section within the forum or on the homepage that explains what each table is for and why it was created? Some tables are obvious, but some are not so.

No. is there a specific table(s) you have a question about? You can check the tpl files and see how that page is constructed, makes it much more clear as to what gets pulled from where

I don't know if this helps but the ERD (for 2.0) is here.

The ERD is very useful in explaining how it all links together and I have it printed out over 8 sheets of A4.

More explanation on Tables AND some fields actually. Any reasons for naming conventions etc

- contact.contact_sub_type

- loc_block table

- mapping table

- Does "Organization" cover businesses, associations, social clubs, sports clubs etc

Things, as a relative newbie to databases, that I'm not sure about is why a field in a table links to the id of the same table (activity.parent_id).

Also, does civicrm replace the standard Joomla! ACL tables or does it somehow link in to them for user registration?

I'm sorry if it is all self explanitory to yourselves but it isn't idiot proof to myself.
