CiviCRM 2.1 in Joomla 1.5.7 on PLESK-based host

I've been spending every day since 2.1 released trying to get it to install without luck. HELP!

Mostly it seems to install, but picking any of the CiviCRM menus gives a blank screen. Sometimes when I install it gives a 'Safari could not open the page "http://mdesp.org/administrator/index.php” because the server is not responding.' (my laptop is a MacBook running Leopard) I've installed and uninstalled and reinstalled Joomla and purchased a new server account.

I HAVE increased the memory_limit = 64M, register_globals=off and max_execution_time=600. I have also created the vhost.conf file in my domain directory: /var/www/vhosts/MarkdeSollaPrice.org/conf/vhost.conf and added the flag php_admin_value open_basedir none.

My hosting company is RackForce with a Linux Virtual Private Servers with PLESK control panel. I've never had any trouble with any other package. MySQL 5.0.58, PHP 5.2.6, Apache 2.2.3, PHP Interface: apache2handler, Joomla! 1.5.7

Could this be a FTP or permission/owner problem? I see the the owner = "mdesp" and the group= "psacln" of all the files/folders. I tried installing joomlaXplorer and uploading civicrm-2.1.0-joomla.zip to the server AND THEN expanding it (which gives me apache/apache 775) but that didn't solve it either.

I don't know what to try next. Any suggestions?

I'd be open to a good Samaritan who wanted to play on my server, just e-mail me and I'll set you up. mark at markandvinny dot com

hey mark:

can you please send me (lobo at yahoo dot com. deepak.srivastava at webaccess dot co dot in) ssh name and password. we'd also need to know where the apache error / access logs are and preferably access to mysql query logs (or how to turn it on / off). if you dont know this info, please ask rackspace before contacting us :) Ideally we'd like to be in touch with you on IRC/IM while we are on the server. We can discuss via email once you get the above info.

we'll take a look at it and help figure it out. If it a user error, we would like you to spend the same amount of time we spent on the issue and help contribute to the forums/documentation
