Matching contacts for importing contributions or events
October 05, 2008, 08:46:08 pm
I searched a little bit and couldn't find an answer.  I have the same problem with CiviEvent.

I want to import a contribution (or event participant) set from a csv file.  The only options I am given for contact matching are: External ID (on version 2.0.2), or External Identifier, Contact ID, or E-mail (on the 2.1 Demo site).  Is there no way to match by name or address, which is the data that we are most likely to gather?

Ideally, my non-profit has an event, and we have a sign-in sheet.  50 people sign in on the paper sheet, and we would type those names up quickly into a csv file, with perhaps only First Name, Last Name and maybe Address data + event or contribution data.  Assuming those folks are already in the database, we could import them to the event or contribution by matching their First Name and Last Name, instead of going through an extra step of matching them to a contact ID, presumably by exporting the database into a worksheet...?

It seemed like I found a way to do this before - I am wondering if I accidentally changed a setting or if CiviCrm changed with a new version.  I hope it is just something I missing, because I think it is valuable to be able to import that kind of data based on at least name contact matching.

Thanks for your help.

Check if you have set correct "Contact Matching" Rule. Looks like you have set it to only "Email".

Thank you - I had edited the "Fuzzy" contact matching rule but not the "Strict" one.

It looks like I'll just have to upgrade the CiviCRM version to fix this, because it doesn't work in my version 2.0.2.  But it's good to know that it has been changed.
