nusoap alternative

I'm trying to rework civimail to use nusoap for a client that doesn't have access to soap on shared hosting.

I was hoping it would be simply a matter of referencing nusoap.php in soap.php as it's written to be a virtual replacement for the soap calls, but it's not working. Has anyone worked with nusoap to get it up with civimail?

Unfortunately, I don’t know about any of the core CiviCRM developers using NuSOAP.
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

There are some nusoap library references throughout the amfphp (?) package in the core dist. I'm not sure how that package is used in CiviCRM.

amfphp library is used as the gateway for the flash-based CiviContribute Widget.
