Moving between versions

Is it possible to move a database between the different versions of CiviCRM (Joomla, Drupal, Standalone)?

theoretically yes :)

practically we have not tried it out, so not 100% sure. You should truncate civicrm_uf_match table when moving db's (since that what connects the CMS to a civicrm contact)

With standalone, there is the authentication piece which might involve a few minor bumps  (but nothing serious)

please report (and document) back with your learning/finding :)

I will give it a try (in a test environment!).

I'm looking for a way to move from 2.0 to 2.1, and migrating via stand-alone may be a great intermediate step if it works, as we don't have the resources to migrate CMS and CRM simultaneously.

I would recommend the following (in a test environment)

1. Install D6

2. Upgrade CiviCRM 2.0 db to 2.1 in the new D6 environment

3. switch to using 2.1 db in standalone mode

the upgrade procedures have been tested a fair amount with drupal/joomla. we've just taken over the standalone code in 2.1 and will support upgrades from standalone going forward
