How to search for our OptOuts
October 07, 2008, 02:42:02 pm
Hi - just wondering if I am missing something obvious. I want to search for everyone who has opted out.

If I use Search Builder = Do not email = 1 I get some results but much fewer than I expect.

I also checked to see if there was an option for 'User Opt Out' (which is the terminology used on the Edit Summary page)

Also on the Summary page it shows as "Privacy:   DO NOT SEND BULK EMAIL"

Ah ha - just found it in Search Builder = "No Bulk Email'

I may be the only one who has been confused by this but it does seem we use 3 different descriptions for this situation
- Do Not Send Bulk Email
- User Opt Out
- No Bulk Mail

Pete - I think it would be good to be a bit more consistent here. The "User Opt Out" label on the contact Edit form is intended to make it clear that this is (primarily) a user-controlled setting - and probably should not be changed without good reason (e.g. person has contacted the organization and asked to opt back in). However, the other two terms are a bit more explicit about the status. Suggestions (not too verbose :-) ) about how to merge these "concepts" into a single term?

I think the crux is "No bulk emails"

So I wonder if we could use this as follows

Summary Page
Privacy:   NO BULK EMAILS

Summary Edit page
User Opt Out (NO BULK EMAILS)

Search Builder
NO BULK EMAILS

Adv Search (unclear if No Bulk Emails is included in Do Not Email? If not suggest we also add a box for )
Privacy NO BULK EMAILS

Does that help?

Peter - I've fixed the labels so they're consistent for 2.2  - "NO BULK EMAILS (User Opt Out)".

This flag is NOT currently covered in Advanced Search. If this is important, please file an issue (and include example use cases so we have rationale / priority for it).

Helper text for User Opt-Out (was "How to search for our OptOuts")
November 21, 2008, 06:27:02 am
Hi there,

Having read this thread I can see the difference between User Opt-Out and Do Not Mail.  Can I suggest we make the helper text for User Opt-Out a bit more explicit?  An end user and I had trouble understanding what it meant.

Something along the lines of the following might be good.

"This option is designed to be set by the contact themselves when they don't want to receive email (e.g. [insert example of where it might be used]) .  Please think before changing it, as it will override the preference they have set."

It's a little long winded but easier for someone who isn't 100% familiar with CiviCRM to understand.

Wasn't sure whether to file this as a new issue or comment on the old issue or what - please advise what you would prefer and I'll do it in future :-)

Michael - I made the change for 2.2 using pretty much your suggested language. I moved it into a help pop-up so as not to take up too much screen real-estate. You can check it out on the sandbox. Thx for specific suggestions from users - always helpful :-)

"This option is designed to be set by the contact themselves when they don't want to receive bulk email from your organization (they set it using the opt-out action from a CiviMail mailing).   Please think before changing it, as it will override the preference they have set."

You can see the change on the 2.2 sandbox - http://sandbox.civicrm.org

Looks good!  I was trying to keep it as short as possible but sticking it in the pop out works better...
