Tracking Contacts that Lack First Names

CiviCRM seems to only let you save a contact if you have a first name.  While this does make sense, shouldn't you be able to save an individual in either of the following circumstances.

1) You supply a first and last name.
2) You supply a prefix (Mr., Mrs., Dr.) and a last name

There are a number of contacts that my client tracks that they have something like the husband's first and last name and they know there's a Mrs., but don't have her name yet and would like to at least add a "placeholder" for her in the system.

I suspect we will rethink this in a 3.x (or later) release. if you'd like to see this happen earlier consider making a code contribution and/or sponsoring the feature

Speaking of code contributions, I saw that CiviCRM is migrating over to Zend Framework for 3.0.  That's completely awesome (and certainly fits the bill for CiviCRM considering it even includes dojo). What's the plan of action there?  Will there be a gradual migration over to Zend Framework or will there be a concentrated effort once the 3.0 dev time approaches?  I'm familiar with and have used ZF, that's why I ask.

Could you get away with using the husband's initial, so the wife of John Smith would be addressed as Mrs J. Smith. If they were being mailed to jointly then they could either be mailed as 'Mr & Mrs Smith' or 'The Smith Household' so that incorrect initial would never be used.

we can do it by hacking the form rule where the form building(by making the last name or any other as not required)...
