unsubscribe emails bounce back with "550 relaying denied"
October 07, 2008, 10:49:47 pm
I'm getting CiviSMTP up and running. I'm almost there, but messages sent to the (re/un)subscribe email addresses are bouncing back with "550 relaying denied" errors.  See an example below (censored to remove personal email info).  My Google searches suggest that it may be an MX mis-configuration.  But this looks right to me.

the only reason that I can think of this happening is that the domain in the to address is not the same as the address that is configured in the civismtp settings.  this is to prevnt abuse, spam, etc.

did the unsub / resub email include the exact same domain name that is configured in the settings?  below it says newsletter.someotherdomain.org

Yes.  Domain in the (un/re)subscribe/reply messages:
newsletter.opportunityagenda.org

CiviSMTP email domain:
newsletter.opportunityagenda.org

CiviCRM Domain FROM Email Address:
contact@opportunityagenda.org

CiviCRM Domain Email Domain:
newsletter.opportunityagenda.org

CiviCRM Domain Return-Path:
NULL

CiviCRM Domain Contact Information Email:
contact@opportunityagenda.org

CiviMail From Address used for this mailing:
info@opportunityagenda.org

CiviMail Reply-to email used for this mailing:
info@opportunityagenda.org

And the only other possible snag that I can think of is that CiviCRM is running on a staging site, on a subdomain of advomatic.com, since the corresponding Drupal site is not ready for launch.

Any progress here?  We'd really like to be sending out emails as soon as possible.

to prevent spamming we require that the addresses are of the correct form which in your case means the reply-to address must start with 'reply.' not 're.'

============================
this address does bounce:

re.1.3.7.35113b5b689f034e@newsletter.opportunityagenda.org

this address does NOT bounce:

reply.1.3.7.35113b5b689f034e@newsletter.opportunityagenda.org

============================

why are your reply addresses different than the standard?

Hey Shane,

Thanks for replying.  I suspect that perhaps CiviCRM is using a different format in 2.1.  I'll dig into the code and report back.

Hi Shane,
They aren't bouncing anymore, but nor are they triggering any action.  I tried an unsubscribe, a reply and also included a known bouncing email as a recipient.  They all just seem to blackhole.  The CiviMail report registers my opens and clickthroughs, but not the replies, bounces, or unsubscribe requests.

The obvious place to look is with the CiviSMTP settings at
https://civismtp.uas.coop/drupal/civismtp/account
But I just ran the test there and CiviSMTP _can_ connect properly to my CiviCRM installation.

Any ideas?

I just reset everything on our end to clear out the caches, etc and I tested an unsub and a resub and all worked.

please try again and let us know.

thx for your patience,
