Standard data fields vs. Custom Data fields
October 09, 2008, 05:08:35 am
Hi folks,

I created an event and added a custom data group that collects street address, postal, city, country, phone - all really standard sort of data. So when my participants register, and I do a search, I see that there is already a street address and so on fields (empty of course)... but can't find how to include these in the online reg form. It's like I've duplicated the data.

Maybe I should have set the "used for" attribute to participants instead of individual when I created the new custom data group? Would that have worked? Gonna try it. Any advice? I feel like I'm missing something that's probably obvious to most, but not the sleep deprived.

Thanks,
Greg

Please refer to on-screen help in "Online Registration" part of Event setup wizard. It's right there next to "Include Profile" fields. For your reference, pasting it here:

If you want collect additional information during event registration, you will need to configure one or two CiviCRM Profiles - which are collections of standard or custom fields. For event registration, you may need to collect additional information specific to a person's participation in an Event. Examples include meal and/or volunteer preferences.

"""
If you haven't already configured custom fields and a profile for this, you can save this screen without selecting a Profile, complete the steps below and then return to Manage Events and select your new profile.

   1. Create a custom field group which is 'Used for' Participants.
   2. Add your field(s) to this custom field group.
   3. Create a profile (e.g. 'Participant Information').
   4. Add your custom field(s) to this profile as profile fields.
   5. Return to this screen (Administer CiviCRM » Manage Events » Configure » Online Registration) and select your profile.

Refer to the online documentation for more details on creating custom fields and profiles.
"""

Thx,
m

Thanks Michal,

This is exactly what I needed... read through the docs too quickly. What I needed to know was how to match up the fields I put in the online reg to what I see in the contact area. I did this by adding individual fields and contact fields and testing to make sure they lined up after reg. I found this page really helpful - http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/How+to+Create+Profiles

Thanks,
Greg
