I have a client who has CiviCRM 1.7 in Drupal 5.x who wants to have events that can be paid for either by credit card or by check. They are using PayPal Web payments Standard... under this setup, there's no opportunity for users to select whether they are going to pay by check, thus registering them for the event with and unpaid status, or to pay immediately by credit card, thus sending them to the PayPal screens...

Am I missing something here or is there no way to accomplish this at the moment?

There has been discussion about this - but it hasn't been implemented yet. (Of course PayPal will allow folks to make a payment from their checking account or with a debit card :-) ).
