Can i convert a Group to a Smart Group
October 14, 2008, 10:14:51 am
This is the topic of a previous post, but the question never got answered and I think my question is actually different.

I have a big group ("newletter") used for a mailing list (not ACL) that I want to convert to a smart group so that it includes some automated members. I don't want to create a new smart group using the "newsletter" group as a criteria because I'm afraid it will loose the removals from that list (i.e., I don't want to include automated members that have removed themselves from the original newsletter list.).

So, I think I want to convert the "newsletter" group to a smart group and then I can include these additional contacts.

1. Is that possible?

or

2. Is there a better strategy?

You can create a Smart Group and add 'non-smart' members to that Group. That should deliver what you want if I understand the double negatives. HTH

Well yes, but read my question again.

If I did that, wouldn't i loose all the opt-out information of the original group?

The group i've got has been used for various mailouts, and if the opt-outers were in one of my other smart groups, they'd get re-added to the new smart group.

You can create a Smart Group from the Manage Groups >> Members search / listing - and exclude group members whose status is "Removed". I think this might accomplish what you need - but you'll need to play with cases a bit.
