how to automatically create a new member ID when you create a member?

I am importing members into Civi, each with a different, pre-existing, member ID.  I would like Civi to create a new member ID number in that field upon new member creation going forward.

How would I do that?  Is that the correct way to be thinking about this?  I think it is because I'll be importing CiviContribute Data as well related to each member.

Not sure I understand your req's completely but ...

For importing existing contacts ("members") - you could import the "legacy" membership ID into the External Identifier field. This field will be your "key" to match to the contact records when you import contributions from them (assuming you can include this value in the contribution data to be imported).

Not sure if you need this value going forward - as new contacts / members will have a unique contact ID assigned by CiviCRM. However, you certainly can input an  External ID for each new contact - and CiviCRM will insist that it is a unique value.

Thanks.  Will the unique ID assigned by CiviCRM be visible to the admin?  How many characters will it be (not a 32 char md5() hash, right)?

CiviCRM assigns a unique integer. It's visible on the Contact Summary (at the bottom right) - "Contact ID: 235"
