FSF High Priority Free Software Projects and CiviCRM
October 16, 2008, 12:34:40 am
Hi,

On of the high priority project is:
"One aspect of the Free Software Foundation that impresses many in the non-profit world is that we run our organization entirely with free software. However, much of our software for contacting our members, keeping track of donors, and managing transactions was developed ad hoc and is starting to become difficult to manage and maintain. There are also many additional features we wish we had. This is true across the entire non-profit sector, and there is a strong need for more good free software donor transaction and contact systems. "

CiviCRM is discussed among others there:

http://groups.fsf.org/index.php/Donor_Transaction_and_Contact_System

I you thing we missed an important point, feel free to contribute, that's a wiki. I'm going to keep an eye on it, see if they are features requested that aren't provided by CiviCRM.

Been discussing with Joshua Gay and  he told me that they used DefectiveByDesign campaign. Did you know ? I don't remember having seen it on the case studies

i've sent email to a couple of FSF addresses about it but not heard back (not a big surprise). Cool that you have a contact within FSF, so hopefully we will get a better idea of their requirements etc

yeah, CivicActions did the Defective By Design implemention. I think it was a 1.7 implementation. We need to do a better job of convincing consulting companies and independent developers to spend 30-60 minutes and write a case study of some of their implementations. Any ideas or suggestions on how we can be more effective with this would be great (i think our current record is quite abysmal

Hi,

Well I got more contact with the FSFE (the european branch), but so far, been responsive.

The specifications and requests are a bit fussy right know, I'm on a mailing list with them, I'll let you know when it gets more detailed.
