CiviCRM/PayPal in shared hosting environment
June 27, 2007, 03:07:58 pm
I'm trying to install CiviCRM under Joomla 1.0.12 in a shared hosting environment featuring PHP 4.4.4 and MySQL 4.1.21.

My ISP has created a SSL-enabled URL (e.g: https://secure273.ispname.com/~myname) for processing payments online with PayPal Website Payments Standard.  The Apache-Open SSL (mod_ssl) interface works fine.

CiviCRM Contribute is set up to allow access on the front-end for users to self register but I don't know how to point it at the SSL-enabled URL, so I'm getting a security certificate error followed by a

"You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

Questions for people smarter than I:
1.  Does this require a civicrm.settings.php hack or am I missing something simple?
2.  On a related matter, where do the PayPal WSDL certificates go?

Cheers

I know it's bad form to reply to one's own posts but, if anyone's interested, I solved this problem by shelling out $75 for a private SSL certificate, which also required a dedicated IP.

I ran into the same problem.

When CiviCRM advances to the payment page, it does so based on the site domain name. Because the shared SSL requires using the shared domain location (hostingcompany.com/~account), it doesn't the secure site location built by CiviCRM (https://domain.com).

Two options: use paypal standard and process payments offsite. Or purchase a dedicated SSL (as you did).

Personally, I think shared SSL certificates are pretty useless, and nothing more than a sales gimmick for hosting companies.
