importing Contributions - how to import different membership types?
October 16, 2008, 12:58:06 pm
I see a field for Contribution Type, but not the membership types.  I have already set up several membership types in the system and need to import those.

Any ideas?

Contributions and Memberships are imported separately. If you want to reflect both the Membership and the "payment" for it, you'll need to do:

* CiviMember >> Import Members
* CiviContribute >> Import Contributions

Thanks.  Now I understand they need to be separated.  How do you import what they paid and when they paid for their MEMBERSHIP, and that it was a membership type contirbution?  Do you only import date paid and amount and external ID?

Thanks

Date paid, contribution type ("Member Dues"), and amount paid are all imported via Import Contributions. The external ID should be used in both imports to link the contribution(s) and the membership to the correct contact record. (Remember that you have to Import Contacts FIRST).

At some point we may be able to find a way to combine these flows - but that's a future feature.

Again - strongly recommend you set up some sample contacts with various memb types and contribution payments, then export them, so you see what the system will expect when you try to pull your data in.

In case anyone wants to know, the import was looking for, not an ID, but the NAME of the contribution ID.  In this case, "Member Dues".  I tried it first but it turned out I tried "Membership Dues".  Then I went through every ID I could find in the database itself.

Lesson learned. peterd is right.

Maybe I should go and put a 'tip' in the documentation section on Importing.

That would be soooo awesome :-)
