Single Civimail Install -> Multiple CiviCRM Sites
October 20, 2008, 10:42:58 am
If I have multiple CiviCRM installs, is it possible to service all of them with a single instance of Civimail? I see that there are some organizations offering "hosted" Civimail, so I assume it can be done, but do I lose any functionality? How much customization of civimail is required?

On a related note, is anyone using the massmailer integration? Does it work as well as Civimail? Is anything lost?

Thanks again for answering a bunch of questions on this. I am excited about the possibilities of CiviCRM, and I want to make sure my bases are covered before jumping into the deep end.

It depends on what you mean by CiviMail. :) From our point of view, CiviMail is a module of a given CiviCRM installation, so there’s always a one-to-one mapping between CiviCRM and CiviMail. (By CiviMail we mean the module that lets you create and schedule mailings, and – if you’re not using an external company for this – also send them.)

These companies offer handling of the return channel ((un-, re-)subscriptions, opt-outs, replies, bounces, etc.) and (in most cases?) the actual sending, but you don’t lose any functionality with regards to flexibility, tracking or anything like this – this is all done either by your CiviCRM install (tracking) or by communication with your install from the companies (the actions initiated via the return channel).

Unfortunately, I have no experience here. We believe it’s obsolete and unmaintained upstream.

Hi,

Based on my experience you need separate drupal installations to have it work.

Just so I understand correctly...

The hosted CiviMail providers are handling the complexity of configuring Postfix and the return channel, and are effectively providing SMTP service to their clients. This means that those organizations on shared hosting or who don't want to deal with all of the technical issues, can use CiviMail.

In my mind, CiviMail and Postfix were somehow tied together, but theoretically, you can use CiviMail with any MTA as long as the config is correct. Postfix is used as the example in the docs because that is what the developers are using.

If I am off base on any of the points above, please feel free to correct me.

Exactly. I’m not sure whether any of them provides only the return channel support or do all of them also work as the mass-mailers, though.

Right again.
