CiviMail wizard buttons
October 21, 2008, 07:04:36 am
Just a casual observation --
A lot of times it seems to me the buttons for multi-step wizards are in illogical order. I'm looking at CiviMail right now, but there are other places where this is so.

Seems to me that the "Next/Continue" button should always be on the right, and "Cancel/Back" should always be on the left, with other buttons either in the middle, or provided as links below the main buttons.

For example, the first CiviMail wizard page has buttons in the following order: Next | Cancel | Save for Later
Several times I've instinctively pushed the "save for later" button because in my mind, the right-most button is what I would click to continue through wizard steps.

Now, maybe this is just a problem with my mind ( :-\ ), so I'd be interested if others notice the same thing.

I'd be interested to hear others feedback on this as well. We do have << Previous to the left and and Next >>  to the right relative to each other - so the question in my mind is where / how to display the other actions (Cancel, Save for Later). I'm not sure I'd vote to put them in between Previous and Next - but possibly grouped further away and styled differently (perhaps links rather than buttons ??).

There's also the issue of tabbing / tab-order to consider when "placing these" :-) And there's a related issue on the 2.2 queue about the buttons on the final step - which would be great to have feedback on as well: http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-3677

I see you are talking about the same version , just that Brian was on Step 1.

I tend to agree that the Next/Continue should be on the right, and have no problem with idea of Cancel/Save for Later being in between. Then again open to hear Dave's idea of having them off by themselves. A simple (from user perspective) step would be to make the Previous/Next buttons stand out by making them a much stronger colour. I have made the same suggestion for the Search button on Advanced Search. It can really help users if the 'default' button that they need leaps out from the rest.

We have a consistent concept of a "default button" on all our forms (in the code) - so it would be easy (I think) to globally add a class for that button which gives it a different style. Would be cool if someone(s) could suggest a good default style for the default button and provide some css for it.
