Social Source donation implementation
October 21, 2008, 08:53:50 pm
I have been looking at options for integrating donation capability into a Drupal based site that I have developed for a 501c3 foundation.  I have looked at CiviCRM for other site purposes and so the inclusion of CiviContribute into the CiviCRM structure seems like a good fit.  I have also considered simply adding a Paypal donation button to the site.

As I was reviewing the CiviContribute site I couldn't help but notice that contributions are solicited for the Social Source Foundation using a Paypal button and not CiviContribute itself.  This seems a bit odd and I am curious as to why CiviContribute was not used for contributions to its own foundation?  I recognize the level of customization afforded by CiviContribute versus the relatively static and simple interface of the Paypal button but I would have expected to see CiviContribute consuming its own product here.  Is there a good reason why this was done using a Paypal button instead?

This is not intended as a jab, I am looking for clues as to whether I should go down the Paypal or CiviContribute path myself.

Thanks!

1. we introduced the donate button quite recently (2-3 weeks ago) after a fair amount of procrastination :)

2. We dont have any person / time devoted to fund raising / marketing, i.e. we are pretty much all developers

3. In earlier versions, we did use CiviCRM on the main site, but kinda neglected it

Bottom line, i think an install of CiviCRM needs some amount of care and feeding (you are dealing with personal information after all). We felt at this time we did not have the energy to do so and were not sure how much donations the paypal button would get it. I think at some point in time (once we get someone to commit time and energy to maintaining/updating it and be more proactive in fundraising/marketing), we will switch it to a CiviCRM install.

Bottom line, the paypal route seemed really trivial to get up immediately

Makes perfect sense, I appreciate the response.
