Event Participant Sponsor

Hello.  I have been reading about civiCRM a bunch and it looks great from what I have seen on the Demo as well.  Is it possible that after a person register to be an event participant that other people could then "sponsor them" for that event.

The "sponsor them" would be a donation that would then show up in the event participants profile with a list of all donations made for "sponsoring" them in the event.

not exactly (but close) what you are looking for, but 2.2 will have personal contribution pages (PCP). The spec is here:

I knew I was not the first person looking for this.  When is 2.2 supposed to roll out?
