Right now, only the advanced search tool will allow you to display results using a profile view. It would be useful to extend that functionality to the basic search and search builder tools.

It'd be even better to be able to set a profile as "default", to be used instead of the one you get now (eg. don't need the state, but would like to have the employer or world region sometimes)

Great idea -- I second. I hack core to add employer to the table in many installs. I'd love not to have to do that.

Seems like the underlying issue here is to provide a SIMPLE way for folks to configure the columns returned in search results in each of the 3 search interfaces. We've hesitated adding the Profile solution to basic search due to concerns about mucking up the simple user interface - although there are probably ways to do this that are relatively unobtrusive for folks (layout suggestions and patches welcome of course). We're currently experimenting with a jquery-based table widget which has a pretty nifty mechanism for hiding / showing columns dynamically - keep an eye out for early 2.2 sandbox CiviCase search listings for a preview of this approach.

Agreed, that's the bigger picture (we had looked at that other CRM a while back that had this ability).
If you're looking at implementing that for v2.2, that would be awesome. I was thinking that dynamic column select would be farther down the road, and that in the short term the profile view would be an easier solution.
