Multiple Event Registration Types
October 26, 2008, 02:47:26 pm
We're creating an event that has multiple types of participants, for example there are sponsors, booth participants and volunteers. Obviously volunteers don't pay whilst the others have multiple levels of payment.

I don't see a way to create multiple registration types for a single event. Am I missing something? The only workaround I see is to create multiple events.

Unless you can use the "trust" system where you expose the various event fees with descriptions of the status that goes with it (including a price of $0 for volunteers) - then I'm not aware of any approach other than multiple events at this time. It would be useful to share a bit about how you imagine this might work ideally in the future. Would you allow folks to select their participant type and then dynamically update the price on the page? Would you required some way to verify that they picked a valid / correct participant type (i.e. do you need some way to validate that someone is actually a volunteer and not just trying to get in "free")?

Going forward, contributing a patch / resource to work on this would help get this functionality implemented :-)

Multiple types works fine I suppose as a workaround (Except that a bunch of things appear to be broken .. discount sets for instance). However from a design perspective, an Event should be able to serve as a container for a number of related activities. I've seen some other requests around the forums and the intertubes looking for this kinda thing: such as registering for individual sessions for a conference (and the associated costs? incrementing participant counts?). The same sort of approach would also work for what I'm trying to do in this case -- register multiple types of participants.

It would involve creating a separate registration entity that was attached to the event, rather than attaching registrations directly to events. I wonder how challenging this would make upgrade paths ...

If I get a moment to breath I'll make a wiki spec. A further moment after that may see some code produced :D
