Civimail works but regular mail doesn't
June 30, 2007, 07:10:31 pm
There is great excitement because we finally got civimail going on our server.  We sent test emails, the tokens were replaced with the VERP stuff, got the messages that it was opened and/or replied to, and the civimail report showed that a user had done so.  Woo-hoo!  All it took was a www.dyndns.org account.

So my remaining question is why does amavis block non-civimail outgoing messages?  I have set the SMTP port as instructed and the various bits of code are installed into master.cf etc.  However local emails result in a bounce message from amavis thusly:

Quote
Subject: Undeliverable mail
From: "Content-filter at ghyfc.podzone.org" <postmaster@ghyfc.podzone.org>
To: username@ghyfc.podzone.org

[-- Attachment #1 --]
[-- Type: text/plain, Encoding: 7bit, Size: 0.4K --]

The message WAS NOT relayed to:
  <username@comcast.net>: 127.0.0.1 said:
   554 5.7.1 Failed, id=07012-06, from MTA([127.0.0.1]:10025): 554 5.7.1
+<username@comcast.net>: Relay access denied

This nondelivery report was generated by the program amavisd-new at host
ghyfc.podzone.org. Our internal reference code for your message is
...

I have changed my actual email to 'username'.   Any suggestions?
I am emailing to the outside world from a server terminal using a program called mutt.

I assume you have your SMTP server (Postfix?) listening on ports 25 and 10025, and the one listening on port 25 is routing its emails through AMaViS, while your outgoing CiviMail mail is going through 10025 (skipping AMaViS altogether).

The above message suggests your AMaViS is configured to not relay some mail; it might possibly see that the comcast.net domain does not match ghyfc.podzone.org and thus think you’re not authorised to mail through it, but it might be something else as well.

Can you try running AMaViS in debug mode and checking what exactly it reports when you try to post through it?

Also, try looking at your AMaViS configuration file(s) and see whether there are any relay-related settings.

A temporary workaround might be setting your mail client to post through the higher port, not routed through AMaViS.
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.
